Build Your Resilience, Be Change Proof
Bestselling author, keynote speaker, workplace expert and resilience researcher Adam Markel inspires leaders to tap the power of resilience to become Change Proof — for themselves and their organizations.
“Change Proof: Leveraging the Power of Uncertainty to Build Long-Term Resilience,” is the title of Adam’s new book (McGraw-Hill, 2022).
In ongoing research for “Change Proof,” Adam has surveyed more than 3000 business leaders and executives on resilience and burnout in a proprietary tool he developed, the Resilient Leader Assessment (resiliencerank.com). He studied how resilient leaders, organizations, and ecosystems respond to existential crises, and what differentiates those that succeed from those that fail.
“My premise is that the best way to deal with change is to embrace it — to accept it, to work with it, and to profit from it — personally and professionally,” says Adam, author of the #1 Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and Publisher’s Weekly best-seller, “Pivot: The Art & Science of Reinventing Your Career and Life.”
The world has shifted dramatically since Adam wrote “Pivot” in 2016. The pandemic and the relentlessly accelerating pace of change calls for business leaders, and anyone who wants to succeed, to adopt a new approach to mastering change.
“To thrive, rather than simply survive, means that instead of operating at your peak for short bursts, you’ll be operating at a high level forever,” Adam says.
To do this requires “doubling down on your resilience rituals, committing at a deeper level to show up for yourself (mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually), and fully utilizing and embracing the unique opportunities that are in front of you.”
As a leading international keynote speaker, Adam has inspired tens of thousands worldwide with his message of resilience as the competitive edge in today’s complex markets. Today he is motivating leaders and organizations to tap the power of resilience to thrive through the massive disruption we now face.
The pandemic has left people feeling afraid, uncertain, stuck, and even paralyzed from taking the action they need to take. This upheaval also presents opportunities for self-reflection, self-care, and attention to relationships — as well as new ways of doing business, generating revenue, and building stronger teams. To do this, Adam calls us to embrace the Change Proof Model:
* Pause. A former lifeguard, Adam notes it is critical to stop fighting when you are caught in a rip current. “This is not about doing nothing. It’s about having an awareness of how much energy you’re expending and how little it’s getting you. It’s counter-intuitive, but we have to pause to give ourselves space to reset.”
* Ask. How can you reset so you’re making change, as opposed to change making you? “This is where we reframe the opportunity to ride the wave of change instead of fighting it."
* Choose. Be intentional in focusing on useful thoughts, ones that transform into a new set of proactive beliefs that will lead to empowering steps forward on the road to life-long resilience. Ritualize recovery for higher performance over the long haul.
“Taken together, the three steps of this model give us a simple, repeatable formula for becoming a resilient agent of change, instead of a victim of it,” Adam says.
Throughout “Change Proof,” Adam shows how leaders can use this method to build personal and organizational resilience. He defines resilience as the ability to not just bounce back from adversity, but to “bounce forward.”
“It’s the ability to thrive, regardless of what may be happening in your environment. When you’re resilient, you’re more able to effectively utilize change, manage your energy, and widen your field of awareness so you can see all your options and create solutions.”
Through years of research on dozens of industries, hundreds of organizations, and thousands of leaders, Adam identified what he calls the Four Zones of Holistic Resilience: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. He defines the latter as alignment between your actions and your time.
“People who are more aligned with their values and purpose are more resilient,” he says. “The moment we are in now presents us each with an opportunity to find, connect with, and align to our purpose.”
Building resilience in all four zones helps individuals and businesses recharge and boost their capacity to take on any challenge they face. The 16 questions in the Rank My Resilience Assessment are designed to gauge our strength in each area.
Today businesses everywhere are being forced to adapt in what Adam calls “pivot by disruption,” including finding new ways to effectively conduct business in the remote world. As CEO of More Love Media, Adam has been using virtual media for years to help people embrace and execute change, cultivate work cultures of greater unity and resilience, and strengthen their voice as purpose-driven leaders. Some topics he can discuss include:

He has spent his life since protecting others and helping to bring them back from the brink of business and professional drowning. He put his calling into practice with his own reinvention, as he outlined in “Pivot.”
After building a multi-million-dollar law firm specializing in finance, commercial, and employment litigation, Adam turned a mid-life crisis into a mid-life calling, pivoting his own career path. He became CEO of one of the largest business and personal growth training companies in the world.
For over a decade, Adam has trained and led programs around the globe in business and entrepreneurship, resilience, leadership, transformation, relationships, and public speaking. As a self-proclaimed “recovering attorney,” he has shared his unique content and heart-led leadership style on four continents, in dozens of countries, and throughout hundreds of cities. Through his podcast “Change Proof,” he shares his insights on pivoting and resilience in today's fast-paced market through interviews with experts, innovators, and influencers in business and life.
Constant and never-ending innovation is the key to creating sustainable success. Our ability to pivot — to reinvent our lives and our businesses — depends directly on how well we can build the skills and tools of resilience into our lives, Adam says.
“Resilience is not something that some people have and some people don’t,” Adam says. “We all have the capacity to learn resilience at any age — and it’s the key to being able to pivot to master any challenge we face.”
